B&O. Steam
locos. the last 30 years. TLC.
Hardbound, 128
pages, 200 illustrations.
This book is primarily a photo album of Baltimore & Ohio's steam
locomotive fleet from the 1920s through to the end of steam, and
includes excellent photos from Leonard Rice and Bruce Fales, as
well as others. The photos are divided between exiting action
scenes and portraits, making the book appealing to B&O fans of
all types and to modelers. Many B&O official mechanical diagrams
are reproduced from a 1954 Diagram book, showing the fleet at
the very end of its life. The book is intended as a general
overview of B&O power in the second quarter of the 20th Century,
when it reached its apogee and then declined, supplanted by
diesels. Many of the photos have not been published before.

BNSF NORTHWEST, A
PART of the WHOLE, THE BNSF RAILWAY in the PACIFIC NORTHWEST . Del Grosso. GNP.
BNSF Northwest is a
detailed description of BNSF Railway operations within the
Northwest since the corporate merger in September 1995. As
everyone knows, BNSF in the Northwest is the end result of the
railways that came before it. All mainline routes are therefore
discussed thoroughly as to their histories. The complete SP&S is
represented, NP with its Stampede Pass and “Funnel” route, and
GN with its Stevens Pass, Marias Pass and the Hi Line. The BN is
discussed as to its operations in the Northwest during its
26-year history. It did far more than was generally given credit
for. Included are line closures, its development of the
intermodal business, and how it changed the faces of the
railroad lines that merged into it. The BNSF is phased in as to
how it carried on after the BN. Feature stories include the
major commodities that sustain BNSF Northwest, i.e. grain,
intermodal and Canadian carload traffic, the new Pacific
Coast/I-5 Corridor, and the 7-year track capacity expansion plan
that progressed for three years (that included the “Funnel” and
reopening Stampede Pass), but was abruptly discontinued after 3
years and never explained. Read how Canadian port and rail
operations dented BNSF Northwest in terms of intermodal growth.
In all, this book is packed with historical dates and facts
about the GN, NP, SP&S, BN, and the BNSF. It is presented in a
dual style of an informative text and guide so the serious
historian and railfan can read about and also visit those
places. This book has been more than a year in the making and
the most definitive historical work done by Mr. Del Grosso. It
is also his first all-color hardbound large format reference
