Built in the late
1980's by GE, the DASH 8-40B diesel locomotives were
identified by their dynamic brake gear located along the
roof line between the cab and engine compartment, with
ventilation provided by large roof-top grilles. These
four-axle, high horsepower engines are still in service
today in North America. Designed by GE in the late
1980's for Santa Fe as part of their "super fleet" of
locos, the four-axle, high horsepower DASH 8-40BW is
still in service today.

Between 1964 and 1966,
EMD built a total of 360 six-axle 2,500hp SD35
locomotives. An additional 35 steam generator-equipped
SDP35 locomotives were also built during this period.
These were all part of EMD’s “35-Series” which also
featured the four-axle, 2,250hp GP35 locomotive. All
locomotives included the standard EMD 567-series prime
mover. A stock model weighed 360,000 pounds, but many
roads chose to add weight to increase the locomotive’s
tractive effort. From the mid-1960s through the 1980s,
the SD-35 could be found in road service on both large
and mid-sized roads across the US. Today the number of
active units has dwindled to a select few, including
those operated by regional railroad Montana Rail Link.
Atlas’ model incorporates many of the subtle details
that differentiated the various SD-35 production phases.
This includes the detail of the engine air intake, dust
bin, radiator screens, radiator fans, fuel tanks and
battery boxes. Other options include a low vs. high
nose, and a low nose with our without a standard-style
headlight.

The 1500hp MP15DC was
designed by EMD as a replacement model for the
successful SW1500 switcher. The longer frame of the
MP15DC allowed for increased fuel capacity and the use
of Bloomberg road trucks; increased sand capacity was
also offered as an option. The first MP15DCs were built
for Missouri Pacific in February 1974 and a total of 246
units were produced through the end of production in
November 1980.The MP15DC is a versatile locomotive that
is employed by both large and small railroads across
North America in road freight and yard switching duties.
It was also purchased by several non-railroad
corporations for use in plant switching service. Atlas
model includes the three different styles of long hood
that were common to the MP15DC throughout production:
standard hood, hood with square air filter box and hood
with angled air filter box (the air filter box is
located in the area immediately ahead of the cab). In
addition, various styles of hood and cab-end sand boxes
are being offered. The model will also include a
see-through cab with various interior details.

New to this production run is a C425
Phase II body style. Phase II models had the battery
boxes moved to rear of the locomotive, placed under the
left side of the sill. The air reservoirs were moved to
the right side of the sill, above the fuel tank. The cab
of Phase II models features a simple set of steps in
place of the battery boxes which were located fore and
aft the cab on Phase I models. Also new to this run is
an alternate cab “face” with horizontal-mounted
headlights and a center-mounted horn to match the
prototype ordered by New Haven and Pennsylvania.
