The Superliner I fleet was built in 1979 by Pullman Standard.
Amtraks Superliners were based on the famous Budd built Hi-Levels
operated by the Santa Fe railroad, for their El Capitan all-coach
train. 102 Superliner I coaches were built, and 48 Superliner I
coach-baggage combination cars with a secure baggage hold instead
of lower-level seating. For transportation of bulk items, trains
would run with cars known as "Material Handling Cars" cargo
carrying freight cars which would run either on the nose or tail
of a consist.

Superior Detailing: All Kato Superliner cars and Material
Handling Cars come with preinstalled detailing and thin railings.
The passenger cars have complete upper and lower level interior
detailing (which can be lit with the installation of an optional
interior lighting kit 7-502), prototypical fluting on the exterior
of the cars, and flush mounted and tinted windows. All cars have
smooth rolling trucks with working bearing caps and shock absorber
construction, and are weighted for a hefty feel and performance.
The included Kinematic tight-lock couplers can be installed on
both passenger and MHC cars.
Lighting Options: Both the Material Handling Cars and Passenger
Cars have been designed for the easy installation of a marker
light kit. Simply remove a plate from the bottom of the car,
insert the light board, and close it again to create a lighted
marker light for the tail end of your Superliner consist.

The Bi-Level
"Gallery" commuter car continues to be a favourite design of many
commuter rail agencies throughout the United States and Canada.
The design debuted on the Chicago Burlington & Quincy railroad for
their Chicago area commuter service.
The Chicago & North
Western quickly followed their lead and eventually owned the
largest roster of this car design anywhere on the continent. They
also had an innovation of their own: the Cab-Coach. This
development meant that the railroad would not have to turn the
locomotive at the end of a run. Additionally, a locomotive facing
out of the terminal meant that exhaust would be kept outside of
the passenger train shed. Trains are pushed into Chicago and
pulled back out to the suburbs.
Chicago's Regional
Transportation Authority, now known as Metra, ordered EMD F40PH
locomotives to replace aged E and F units when they took over
operation of Chicago's commuter rail system. These light blue
locomotives could be seen pulling Chicago & North Western Bi-Level
commuter cars for several years as the passenger car fleet was
gradually repainted in RTA colors.
Amtrak purchased a
dozen former C&NW Bi-Level cars that had been used on C&NWs
trains to Green Bay, WI and the upper peninsula of Michigan. Once
repainted, they could be found in service on various Amtrak routes
fanning out from Chicago. |
