Union Pacific Smoothsided Passenger Cars, 4 car Sets. |
| Prototype Information — |

"Streamliners" were operated by
Union Pacific, Chicago & North Western, and Southern Pacific with some
equipment "pooling" with Wabash and other railroads. The most famous trains
were the City of Los Angeles and the City of San Francisco, departing from
Chicago, IL for the West. Additional trains were known as the City of
Portland and the City of St. Louis.
The biggest partners, UP and C&NW, advertised "Route of the Streamliners" on
their box cars. In essence, each of the partner railroads "owned" portions
of the train; they were true partners, not simply connecting railroads.
Today, these trains remain among the best remembered of all postwar
lightweight passenger trains. Even today, the Union Pacific Historic Fleet,
used for company business as well as special excursions, continues the long
tradition of yellow and gray passenger trains. |
| Model Features — |

Gunderson Maxi-IV-Stack 3 Unit Set. |
Photo Information — |
 |
Prototype Information — |
intermodal container service is one of the most popular types of freight service on rails today. The Maxi-IV car is the mainstay of the U.S. domestic double-stack car fleet. Providing an optimum balance between tare weight and capacity, the Gunderson MAXI-IV is a 3-unit articulated double-stack car that can handle containers from 20-foot to 53-foot long in the well and containers 40-foot to 57-foot in the top, or double-stacked, position. As of a result of its versatility and sturdy construction, the MAXI-IV is now the mainstay of the U.S. domestic double-stack fleet.
Pacer Stacktrain Notes;
The Pacer Stacktrain network spans
the service areas of all major North American railroads. With some 50,000
miles of track, Pacer Stacktrain is the most extensive rail distribution
system in the marketplace. Pacer maintains the largest domestic container
fleet in the industry, with approximately 30,000 48' & 53' containers, the
majority of which are 53’ high-cube units with 110" door openings.
TTX Notes;
TTX leasing
(originally known as the Train Trailer Company) is owned by
many major railroads and hires out its cars for use all across
North America. TTX has over 210,000 rail cars in service,
92-94% of which are in use on any given day, making this
MAXI-IV unit a common sight on any railroad.
BNSF Notes;
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad first took delivery
of the MAXI-IV railcar in 2000. Ongoing deliveries of this car
since that time have put thousands of these cars on the BNSF
roster... these cars can now be seen on virtually any mainline
railroad from coast to coast. |
Model Features — |
The Models feature a metal injection-molded frame, enhanced by the extensive detail of piping and running board. Like the prototype, the model features two different sized wheels! The two end trucks will have 33” scale wheels while the two middle trucks will have 38” scale wheels. (This is done on the prototype for weight bearing reasons, with the greater weight of the load being borne by the wheels of the mid-car trucks than by the wheels of the trucks on each end.) Shock absorber construction provides smooth and stable operation, with or without the container loads. The KATO Kinematic trucks maintain the prototypical appearance on straight track while delivering smooth operation on curved track. KATO magnetic knuckle couplers allow automatic coupling and uncoupling action. Each set includes six removable and individually numbered 53-foot containers. The packaging is designed for the separated storage of the articulated unit, providing ease and security when not in use. Click Here For Continental Modeller Review. Or Click Here. |

Wisconsin Electric is interesting in that it is not, actually, a railroad,
but rather a power company that has purchased its own coalporters to
transport coal to its plants. Running these cars under contract commonly
with the UP or BNSF, WEPX uses the other railroads' locomotives and lines to
move its coal to its power plants. |

Great Northern "Empire Builder" Coach Packs etc. |
| Prototype Information — |
The "Empire Builder" ran from Chicago to St. Paul/Minneapolis via the Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR and then via the Great Northern Railway to Seattle along the northern tier of states through the Cascade mountain range and through the Cascade tunnel and Glacier National Park in Montana. In Spokane, a section of the train went on to Portland via the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. Head end power consisted of 3 locomotives as an A-B-A combination. There were other trains these cars could be used on that were operated by the Great Northern such as the "Internationals" between Seattle and Vancouver, "Western Star" between Chicago and Seattle, "Dakotan" the "Winnipeg Limited" and others.

Amtrak Superliner Coaches, MHC & Baggage cars. |
| Prototype Information — |
Superliners; Amtrak currently operates Superliner 1 and Superliner 2 cars. Delivery of the original Superliner 1 cars began in 1979 with the first cars operating on short runs originating in Seattle and Chicago. As more cars arrived, entire Superliner trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns. Katos models are based on the five Superliner 1 car types. They are: Coach-Baggage, Coach, Diner, Sleeper, and Lounge.
MHC; In 1989 Amtrak began receiving a second version of the MHC, the MHC-2, which carry road numbers in the 1500-series. These cars differed in some notable ways. The trucks were a new design that had a longer wheelbase than the earlier cars. Further, there was a body snubber anchor mounted on the sides of the car above each truck. These two details are the most obvious differences between the two car series, however the body and roof are entirely different from the earlier cars.
Baggage Car; Two of Amtraks "smoothside" baggage cars came from Union Pacific and were renumbered as 1075 and 1076 when they were repainted for Amtrak. The Phase I paint scheme is an excellent match for the Phase II paint scheme that appears on the Superliners. |
| Model Features — |
Superliners PhIII & PhIV; New run with entirely new road numbers, allowing you to use these to complement your existing Superliner sets, or simply to start a new train.
MHC; This production of the MHC-2 will be decorated in Amtrak's Phase IV paint scheme. All cars are factory equipped with Kato's Magnetic Knuckle Coupler with fine lettering. Cars will be equipped with trucks that have pickup contacts. This will facilitate modeler installation of aftermarket End of Train / Flashing Rear End Devices (EOT/FRED). NOTE: Kato does not manufacture EOT/FRED kits.
All cars are factory equipped with the Kato fully-automatic knuckle coupler and feature finely lettering with car number and other markings. Interior of cars can be lighted with optional installation of #11-204/11-206 0r LED Versions #11-209/11-210 (Light Kit with White LED is DCC friendly), See Bottom Of This Page For More Info. |
