Bettendorf.

(A.A.R. Standard) One of the first (1903) one-piece cast sideframes with integral journal boxes, this style was the most widely used during the first 50 years of this century.

Description.

Archbar.

This flexible Truck type was nearly universal on all freight cars until 1938. At that time, it was prohibited for use in interchange service.

Roller Bearing.

(Symington Ride Control) Though testing was complete on fully equipped Trains in 1930, this style did not become standard until 1956. Then in 1966 the A.A.R. made them required on all new cars. Rebuilt cars were included in 1970 and by 1978 more than 70% of north Americas rolling stock was roller bearing equipped.

Barber® Roller Bearing.

(Barber® S-2-C) This style, considered ‘modern era’ came on the scene in the late ’60s.

Andrews Truck.

A contemporary of both the Archbar and the Bettendorf (A.A.R. Standard) trucks. Its cast frame design was less one to failure and allowed the use of expensive, serviceable journal boxes left-over from retired Archbar Trucks. The two main spotting features are the bolts that attach to the journal boxes and the tie-bars from the bottom of each journal box to the diagonal of the casting.

Dalman Truck.

Developed in the 1920s, the Dalman 2-level truck improved riding quality by combining a wider bolster with more and softer springs.

Coil-Elliptic.

A variation of the A.A.R. Standard design, but with a non-harmonic sing combination consisting of coil sings and an elliptic leaf sing. This arrangement provided good shock absorption and prevented rhythmic side-to-side sway on uneven Track by using unequal damping control.
