The 700 Series Shinkansen was Designed for Japans Shinkansen dedicated
high-speed rail lines were built between 1997 and 2004, entering service
in 1999. The design goal was to produce a train almost as fast as the
500 Series Shinkansen but at a substantially lower cost. This goal was
met, and 83 trains have been built and are in service. Top speed in
service is 285 km/h (177 mph), but given that speeds higher than that
are only permitted on a few stretches of line, the journey time is
actually only a little longer than for a 500 series.
Unlike the sleek 500 series, the 700 series is characterized by its flat
'duck-bill' nose. 16-car units are painted white with blue stripes
beneath the windows, and are used for Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama
services on the Tōkaidō and Sanyo lines.
Both the 800 series and Taiwan High Speed 700T were directly developed
from the 700 series.

The E2 Series Shinkansen are new trains
built between 1995 and 2005 for Japans Jōetsu, Tōhoku and Nagano Shinkansen
high-speed dedicated rail lines. They are formed in 8 or 10 car sets,
The sets can be coupled to E3 Series Shinkansen Komachi sets using couplers
hidden behind sliding nose doors. Their maximum speed is 275 km/h (170 mph),
and 260 km/h (163 mph) on the Nagano Shinkansen.
An E2-1000 Series train (J56) broke the Japanese rail speed record for a
production train (i.e. not a dedicated test train) in April 2003 when it
reached a speed of 362 km/h during a series of late night high speed test
runs between Urasa and Niigata on the Jōetsu Shinkansen. Each window was expanded over two rows of seats
inside, the red line was changed into pink and a symbol marks of swallow
and apple were painted on the body. Currently
it runs at the highest speed of 275 km/h between Tokyo and Hachinohe in
the northern part of Japan.
Exports;
China ordered a number of 250 km/h (153 mph) trains based on the
E2-1000 Series design, renamed it as CRH2, becoming the second
Shinkansen train exported apart from the 700T series for Taiwan.
These CRH2 trains consist of total 60 sets, the first 3 sets
(2001-2003) were built in Japan, the next 6 sets were delivered
in complete knock down (CKD) form and assembled by CSR Sifang
Locomotive and Rolling Stock, the rest (51 sets) were built by
Sifang through technology transfer from Japan. The first train
arrived at Qingdao port on March 8, 2006.

The E4-Max Series Shinkansen were the second series of completely bi-level
Shinkansen high-speed train sets to be built in Japan (the other being the
E1-Max Series; the 100 Series also featured two bi-level cars per train set
in Most configurations). They operate on the Tōhoku, Jōetsu Shinkansen and
Hokuriku Shinkansen. E4 trains feature double-decker cars to accommodate
additional commuter traffic around Tokyo and other urban areas. They are
often coupled to 400 Series trains on the Tōhoku Shinkansen at Fukushima.
Two eight-car sets can be coupled together for extra capacity: the
sixteen-car E4 train set is the highest-capacity high speed rail train in
the world, carrying a total of 1,634 passengers.
26 units were built between 1997 and 2003. As with the earlier E1-Max series
trains, The maximum speed is 240 km/h.

The 0 Series Shinkansen were the first train sets built to run on Japans new
high speed rail network, and are therefore still the image of the Shinkansen
in the minds of most non-Japanese because of all the publicity they received
when the first Shinkansen line began operation in 1964.
The 0 series (Which were not originally so classed; there was no need to
distinguish classes of train set until later) entered service with the start
of Tōkaidō Shinkansen operations in 1964. These units were white with a blue
stripe along the windows and another at the bottom of the car body,
including the front pilot.
Unlike previous Japanese trains, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen were standard gauge
(1,435 mm, 4'8½"). The trains are all powered by 25 kV AC electricity at 60
Hz. On the 0 series, all axles of all cars are powered by 185 kW traction
motors; this is sufficient for a 220 km/h (136 mph) top speed.
The original trains were 12-car sets; some subsequent sets were 16 cars.
Later, shorter trains of 6 cars and even 4 cars were assembled for lesser
duties. Production of 0 series units continued from 1963 until 1986. Common
myths suggest that the 0 series Are modelled after the Douglas DC-8 jetliner
or an actual bullet (hence the western term "Bullet train"). Neither myth is
true. It is actually designed after a World War II bomber, the Yokosuka P1Y,
as Tadanao Miki designed both vehicles.
Existence as a Shinkansen train is tough; though most rail equipment has a
service life of thirty or more years, Shinkansen sets are retired after
fifteen, and they are generally removed from service after that point. All 0
series cars are now past fifteen years of service; therefore, few are left.
The only 0 series sets now in use are 6 car sets used on JR West Kodama
services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, and on the Hakata Minami Line, which
is technically not a Shinkansen line. Outside of Japan, the leading vehicle
from a 0 series set can be Seen at the National Railway Museum in York. It
was donated to the museum by the JR West company in 2001.

The 800 Series
Shinkansen train was developed by Hitachi for use on the Kyushu Shinkansen
high-speed rail line. The trains were introduced on the Tsubame services in
March 2004.
The 800 series is slightly slower than its predecessors, the 500 Series
Shinkansen and 700 Series Shinkansen: it will only reach a maximum speed of
260 km/h (160 mph) in service, although its design speed is up to 285 km/h
(180 mph).
It abandons the 700 "duckbill" nose in favour of a sharper nose more
reminiscent of the 300 series. Seating is four abreast (2 by 2), with
wheelchair-accessible seating and lavatory facilities in two of the six
cars.
Introduced in Kyushu, the most
southern major island of Japan, The white streamlined body
with dull red accents is a perfect blend of speed and power. Currently
operating in the southern region of Kyushu with 70% of its route under
tunnels, this new kid on the rails is able to achieve speeds in excess of
260 km/h despite inclines up to 35%!

The 500 Series
Shinkansen are the fastest, most powerful and most expensive train sets yet
to run on Japans Shinkansen high-speed rail network. They are designed to be
capable of 320 km/h (200 mph) although they currently operate at a maximum
of 300 km/h (186 mph) in service. The running gear utilises
computer-controlled active suspension for a smoother, safer ride. All
sixteen cars in each train are powered, giving a maximum of 18.24 MW of
power (25,000 hp). Each train costs an estimated ¥5 billion. Because of that
price tag, only nine were built.
Visually they are quite striking, with a long, pointed needle nose more like
that of a supersonic plane than a conventional high speed train. In 1990,
Hitachi commissioned Neumeister Design of Germany to create an exterior and
interior design for a new Shinkansen. It became the basis for the
development of the 500 Series.
The first set was delivered for testing in 1995, entering passenger service
in March 1997. The entire fleet of nine sets was delivered by 1998. They are
normally used only on the premium Nozomi services, but are also used on
Hikari Rail Star services during the busy holiday periods.
When the full fleet of new N700 Series Shinkansen trains is in operation by
2009, it is expected that the 500 Series trains will be reassigned to other
as yet undecided duties and restricted to the Sanyo Shinkansen. There is a
possibility that they may be reformed and shortened.

The N700 Series Shinkansen is a high-speed train with tilting capability
developed jointly by JR Central and JR West for use on the Tōkaidō and
Sanyō Shinkansen lines. The prototype 16-car train was delivered in
spring 2005 for extensive testing, and trains entered into service on
July 1, 2007, with eight daily Nozomi service runs. The N700 the
front of the N700 has been redesigned using airplane technology to
produce a more dynamic and highly aerodynamic nose.
Full-production N700 trains have a maximum speed of 300 km/h, and
tilting of up to one degree will allow the trains to maintain 270 km/h
even on 2,500 m radius curves that currently have a maximum speed of 255
km/h. According to the 2007 JR schedule, this will reduce the travel
time between Tokyo and Osaka to 2:25, shaving five minutes off the
current time taken.
There are currently a total of four daily round-trip runs using the N700
(three between Tokyo and Hakata Station in Fukuoka, and one between
Tokyo and Shin-Ōsaka Station). Two more round-trip runs will be added in
September 2007
