Prototype Information — |
The Series E257 appeared in December 2001 to replace the Series 183 and
189, which had been used since the time when JR was known as JNR.
Working from the basic design of the Series E653 and E751, new
technology such as cold-weather and snow enduring structuring has been
employed on the E257. The 5-color diamond patterns on its white body are
also very unique. It is currently operated as express trains “Azusa” or
“Kaiji” between Tokyos urban area and the scenic Yamanashi and Nagano
regions with Japan Alps. The E257 won the “Blue Ribbon” award from the
Association of Railway Fans in 2002.
Kato has faithfully represented the gentle curves and
beautiful colouring of the body in an N-scale model in a remarkably
realistic and precise manner.

The prototype was introduced in April, 1995 with the sharp blue metallic
top car as an AC express train, which has adopted the pendulum swing
system, for the first time, in JR Kyushu. Currently five 7-car
trains and three 5-car trains are operated as express "Sonic" between
Hakata and Oita in Kyushu, the southern island of Japan. Kato has
employed the 7-car train as its N-scale model train, and the model
train represents the pendulum swing, leaning on curves.

The prototype, Series E231, made its
debut in 2000 as a new standard electric train for JR
East to succeed Series 209 and E217. The Series E231
comprises two types, suburban type and commuter train
type, which is made with smaller seating space to carry
as many commuters as possible during rush hours.
The scale model is based on Series E231 1000 and over
Suburban Type, which was deployed in 2000 to Oyama
Electric Train Zone. Different from the said commuter
train type, it is furnished with such equipment as
toilets and seat layout, which is needed for long
distance travel. It has also push buttons on passenger
car doors for passengers to open the doors in cold
winter, as the E231 Suburban Type is mostly operated in
relatively cold regions. This series trains are being
used in increasing numbers on the Tohoku and Takasaki
lines and the Shonan-Shinjuku line, part of Tokaido
mainline.

The name “Odoriko” (Dancing Girl) comes
from a story of romance in Izu, written by the Nobel
laureate novelist, Yasunari Kawabata,
The Series 251 Super view Odoriko made its debut in
1990 as an express train for speedy travel between
Tokyo and resorts in scenic Izu Peninsula Province. To
Be Able To Enjoy the superb views, the train was made to consist of
double-decker and single high-Deck cars only. The
appearance was enhanced with bold curves in
streamlined form, painted originally light blue. In
order to comply with the various needs for a
sightseeing train, the interiors were also separated
into three parts, one made for group tourists, the
second with green reclining sheets for the first-class
Travellers and the third with very wide view windows in
high-Decker cars. In 1991, the train received the “Laurel”
award from the association of railway fans of Japan.
In 2002, 12 years after its debut, an Up-Grade was made
on the train with new modern painting of ivory and
turquoise colours separated with a blue line. The
facilities inside the train were also then improved,
including addition of accommodations for the
handicapped. Kato plans to make an N-scale model of
the train in this new painting.

JR Hokkaido in the northern main
island of Japan started operation of Series Kiha283
Express Train "Super-Ozora" ("Blue
Sky") in 1997. This is a pendulum diesel train, an
improved version of Kiha 281 operated as express
"Super-Hokuto" ("Northern Stars").
It exceeds its predecessor in many respects, such as
body shape, passenger car equipment, state-of-art
high-power motor and linked self-controlling pendulum
trucks. In appearance, it is featured with a silver
stainless-steel passenger part combined in one body with
the blue steel car-top in the locomotive and with the
logo "FURICO 283" on the side, meaning
pendulum type series Kiha283.
Compared to the Kiha281, the Kiha283 has several big
differences. The ventilators are removed from the
rooftop, making the train appear more streamlined. The
windows on the body sides, which were combined in a line
on the 281, are now clearly separated from each other.
The front train mark and body-side displays are now made
with LEDs.
